The Redwood Residence is located in a quiet enclave, surrounded by water, in the hamlet of Sag Harbor. The site, a shy 1/3 acre corner lot was home to a small 2- bedroom cottage and a modest swimming pool. The owners of the property, who coincidentally run a renowned construction company, were eager to transform the site and build their dream home.
The property sits adjacent to a small marina and maximizing the view of the bay was paramount. The couple, who often worked from home, required a visual separation between public, private, and work-related spaces. Having formal space for outdoor entertainment was also a major program requirement. The existing pool created an boundary on the west side of the property, and double front yard setbacks, common for corner lots, restricted the North and East corners.
The residence is presented as three gabled volumes clad in yellow cedar rain screen. A flat roof slides between the structures delineating space on the exterior. Public space, office space, and guest space make up the 1st floor. A unique showcase stair sporting cantilevered oak treads divides the kitchen and dining from the living room and outdoor spaces. Floor to ceiling glass doors pocket behind the fireplace connecting the living room and bar with the outdoor patios and pool.
This long structure sits parallel to the water and every room has over-sized floor to ceiling glass to maximize the view. On the 2nd floor, the primary suite faces the intersecting roads and greets the sunrise over the water.
